August author and cocktail of the month with Jane Fallon and her new book Just Got Real. We’ve paired the classic cocktail ‘Pina Colada with her book as she can picture all three main characters sipping this on the beach.

Interview with Jane Fallon

Jane Fallon is the multi-award-winning television producer behind shows such as This Life, Teachers and 20 Things to Do Before You're 30. Her Sunday Times bestselling books - Getting Rid of Matthew, Got You Back, Foursome, The Ugly Sister, Skeletons, Strictly Between Us, My Sweet Revenge, Faking Friends, Tell Me a Secret, Queen Bee and Worst Idea Ever - have sold over a million copies in the UK.

1. Tell us a little bit about your new book?

Joni is persuaded to try online dating for the first time by her teenage daughter. When she meets Ant he seems perfect, except that it turns out the only genuine thing about him is his photo. Everything else is a lie. And he's still messaging other women and leading them on too, so she decides to take matters into her own hands

2. What inspired the idea for your book?

So many of my friends have been online dating over the past few years and I listened to their stories with a mixture of awe and horror. I tried to imagine how I would feel if I had to put myself out there after coming out of a long term relationship as Joni does..

3. What part of the book was the most fun to write?

That's a hard one. The easy parts are when it's flowing well. I loved writing the meet ups between the three women in this one, and the way their friendship develops.

4. If you could match a cocktail to your book, what would it be and why

I'd say a Pina Colada because I can picture all three main characters sipping this on the beach.

5. Do you relate to any of the characters in your book?

Joni is the most like me of any of my heroines - she's a bit closed off emotionally, and she uses fitness as therapy. If I go a couple of days without working out I can feel my mental health take a nosedive.

6. What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

The central relationship (friends, colleagues, siblings, a couple?) and the general world, so in this case online dating. Then I try to imagine how I could pull apart that relationship in the world I've chosen

7. How many books have you written and which is your favourite?

This is number 12. My latest book is always my favourite because you grow so close to the characters. This one aside I'd probably say Queen Bee because I love the relationship between the heroine and her daughter.

8. How do you like to relax when you read a book?

Feet up. Coffee (daytime) or alcohol (evening) and the cat snuggled up next to me.
